Service
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27
If, at the end of a student’s time at Mekeel, he or she has learned about the Jesus of the Bible and about the spiritual disciplines, and even an apologetics view of creation and the Creator, but not that our calling is to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the world around us, then we will have failed. Faith that makes us better but leaves those around us in need is not true faith at all. Thus we take service seriously at Mekeel and plan to continue to expand this emphasis for our students. Every year we designate one week Spirit in Action Week and take time to get out into the community to demonstrate Christ’s love by meeting the physical needs of those around us. Every class, from Kindergarten to our Seniors, does a service project of some sort. Older students leave campus and get out into the neighborhood while younger students work around Mekeel serving their Lion Family as they work to make our school building a little nicer. We also have Missions Awareness Week, a time where students hear from missionaries serving around the world and right here in America.
These special events are not enough, though, for service must become a part of the everyday fabric of our lives, so there are many more regular service learning opportunities for our students. From elementary classes making “friends” with elderly neighbors at an assisted living facility to high school students traveling the globe to support Christian ministries in places like the Dominican Republic, opportunities are provided to students to meet some of the physical and emotional needs in addition to the spiritual needs of those around us. Through Mekeel Cares events, special fundraisers for circumstances of acute need that arise within our purview, special community service projects, or volunteering to work after school with younger children to help meet their academic needs, we desire to make Christ known and the lives of those around us just a little bit better.
